Muddy bass......

Heard this term alot in magazines and mixing tips, can anyone actually define a muddy bass, and describe how to avoid this. Also, tips on getting a good bass synth or bassline?

dunno about that muddy bass term myself.

i do know that for a good sounding sub you could record yourself humming but put the mic to your neck not mouth or...
and this one aint to nice... FART through the mic.

no silly wet fart though, gotta be a real blaster.

once you done either one add some effects here and there to your likin and POW. nice deep basslines.

another good bassline.

if you got a turntable put your finger lightly on the bit of the needle / cart where the wire are showing and you get a nasty rumblin deep feedback.

real dirty / distorted subby sound.

Another good method for nice fat rich basslines is to record a bass guitar and filter the high's off, alot of the hi-mids, but boost around 70khz and around 40khz. You get more of a muddy bass that rumbles, but still pop's on the lower mids.

hahaha people get eq so twisted!

mud generally lives between 400-700hz. (Doesnt mean take it all out. Sweep the freq with a narrow Q and then once you find the undesirable (or desirable) widen the Q a bit and boost or cut.)

HIGH END freq will actually HELP to define your kick drum.

THE BEST EQ IS SUBTRACTIVE!!!
Make room for freq to play nicely!
